Point of Origin

(1999) Patricia Cornwell, Warner, £5.99, pbk, 440pp, ISBN 0-7515-2322-4

Ninth outing for Cornwell’s Chief Medical Examiner heroine, Dr. Kay Scarpetta, her niece Lucy, and Detective Marino. This is a kind of ‘let’s tie up some loose ends’ book, tracing the fate of Carrie Grethen, sidekick of a mass murderer and former lover of Lucy. On the whole, it doesn’t really work, except on the level of character development, moving on the whole soap opera of this universe, but for Scarpetta junkies any new book is welcome. The tenth book, Black Notice, is due soon.
